Ethanol(EtOH)hasmultipleeffectsonhumansandotheranimals.Alcoholaddictionandorgandamageareactiveareasofresearchwithaneedforresearchreagentsandtools.¹Phosphatidylethanol(PEth)isadirectmetaboliteofEtOHandhasbeendescribedasalong-livedbioMarkerforalcoholingestion.^2,3ItispossIBLethatPEthisinvolvedintheneurological⁴,protective⁵,andharmful⁶effectsofalcohol,butthemechanismsarestillbeingexplored.
Autologousanti-PEthantibodiesarefoundinlowerabundanceinserumfromheavierdrinkers.Thisinverserelationshipbetweenanti-PEthIgGlevelsandalcoholingestionwasfirstreported,byNissinenet.al.⁷EvaluationofserumsamplesofvaryingconsumptionhABItshasdemonstratedahighdegreeofcorrelationwithingestedalcohol.Measuringtheseautologousanti-PEthIgGlevelsmayserveasaneffectivebiomarkerinmonitoringalcoholuse.
