BackgroundInformation	Thetransmembrane,calciumdependentmoleculeE-cadherinisconsideredtobeoneofthekeymoleculesintheformationoftheintercellularjunctionalcomplexandestablishmentofpolarityinepithelialcells.Catenins,thealpha-subunit(102kDa),beta-subunit(88kDa)andgamma-subunit(82kDa),[reviewedinTakeichi,1991]areagroupofproteinsthatinteractwiththeintercellulardomainofE-cadherin,resultingincomplexesofE-cadherin/beta-catenin/alpha-cateninorE-cadherin/gamma-catenin/alpha-Catenin(Hincketal.,1994).Beta-catenin,thevertebratehomologueofDrosophilasegmentpolaritygenearmADIllo,andkeyelementoftheWntsignaltransductionpathways,isimportantinembryogenesis,celltransformation,andintercellularadhesionincludingtheadhesion,motilityandmetastasisofcancercells.Thus,cateninproteinexpression,regulationandlocalizationarepotentiallyimportantMarkerstopredictmotilityandinvasivenessofepithelialneoplasms.Theregionsofbothalpha-andbeta-catenin,locatedon5q21-22and3p21,havebeenshowntobeinvolvedinthedevelopmentofcertaintumors(seeJiang,1996;Schlosshaueretal.,2002)andreducedexpressionsofbothalpha-andbeta-cateninhavebeendescribedinvarioustumorsincludingbreastcarcinoma(Hashizumeetal,1996).Besidesadhesionfunctions,beta-cateninbindstothetumorsuppressorgeneAPC.APCmutationdisturbstheequilibriumandcytoplasmiclevelsoffreebeta-cateninlevelinthecellandmayhavearoleintumOrigenesis.
